Retirees Work for the Employee Free Choice Act
Saturday, February 28, 2009
The Employee Free Choice Act is important to American retirees, and Texas seniors are working to get it through Congress. Texas Alliance for Retired Americans Secretary Gene Lantz is asking for opportunities to carry this important message to all organizations, inside and outside the labor movement. In the last two weeks, Lantz spoke to these organizations:
- UAW 848 retirees
- UAW 848 active members
- Tarrant County AFL-CIO
- Dallas County AFL-CIO
- A theology class at SMU
- North Texas Jobs with Justice
- A student organization at UNT in Denton
- The Lake Highland Democrats Club
- UAW 218 Retirees
President Ennis Johnson of UAW 870 has invited Lantz for March 2, and there is a possibility of another college class at UT-Arlington.
At the end of March, there will be activities all over the nation in support of this important legislation. North Texas Jobs with Justice and the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement will highlight the legislation at their celebration of Cesar Chavez' birthday at 2 PM Saturday, March 28, at 2218 E. Main in Grand Prairie.
Every working person is learning the importance of the Employee Free Choice Act. As he handed the ARA leadership to Barbara Easterling, George Kourpias gave a statement regarding the Employee Free Choice Act: “There is no doubt in my mind that the fate of workers and retirees is undeniably linked. We cannot have a solid, stable retirement unless we have a solid, stable middle class.” By standing together, union workers fought for and won better wages, health care and pensions, and safety and respect on the job. He continued, “Workers and retirees must fight together to pass the Employee Free Choice Act so we can finally crack down on companies that break the law and try to block a worker’s freedom to join a union,” He advised seniors to call their elected officials in Washington through the U.S. Capitol switchboard at 202/224-3121.
