Retiree Leader to Attend White House Economic Meeting
Chance to Reaffirm National Commitment to Social Security, Coyle Says
The following statement was issued today by Edward F. Coyle, the Executive Director of the Alliance for Retired Americans and an invited participant in today's Fiscal Responsibility Summit at the White House.
"I am looking forward to participating in today's Fiscal Responsibility Summit. I am confident that we will have a constructive meeting, one that reaffirms our national commitment to current and future retirees.
"Social Security is one of our greatest success stories - it has kept millions out of poverty and has allowed older Americans to retire with dignity. It is a safety net for our nation's elderly, our widows and widowers, and our young children who have seen a parent die. Without Social Security, 13 million seniors and 1 million children would fall below the poverty line.
"Today's retirees want their children and
grandchildren to have a safe, stable retirement
when their working days are done. Social
Security does not need a major overhaul, but
instead our conversations should focus on how
to strengthen - not weaken - Social
Security. I look forward to working with
my fellow Summit attendees and the Obama
administration to make sure the American dream
continues for generations to come."
